Tattoos in Aramaic

Shapirta.jpg (175411 bytes)
Shafirto (Western Dialect),  Shapirta (Eastern Dialect),
This is how Jesus would say Beautiful in Aramaic.
(Font #1 Tur Abdin)

The word Tattoo evolved from the Aramaic word Otwoto

In ancient times people used to write certain words, letters or symbols on their bodies as talisman or magical signs to protect them from danger, enemies, evil spirits, and/or influence events in their favor.  And since calligraphy was used in this process, this art was given the name of “Letters” or “Lettering”.  The word for letters in Aramaic is Otwoto (in western dialect) or Atwata (in eastern dialect), and since it is a common practice in Aramaic to drop the vowel from the beginning of the word, Otwoto became Twoto, later the western world borrowed this Aramaic word and it evolved into Tattoo.

We can transliterate your name, or translate an expression you want to Aramaic

  1. You select a font style that you like from the above chart.

  2. Give us the name or expression you want written in Aramaic.

  3. Our fees (for up to five words) is $25.00 (which is our minimum charge), For more text, contact e-mail us for a quote.

  4. We will supply you with the translated text in Aramaic on a JPG format picture via e-mail, which you can print on your computer then hand to your tattoo artist for inking.

  5. We will also include the way the Aramaic text is pronounced in a phonetic way using Latin alphabet.

Note: Aramaic alphabet (like Arabic and Hebrew) is written from right to left, it is mainly a Consonant alphabet, the Vowels are Diacritical Signs placed above or below a letter, and in all practical applications they are omitted, especially in proper names.  (they are mainly used when there are two words written the same way, but pronounced differently).  So if you notice that your name looks shorter (i.e. with less number of letters), the reason is that there are no vowels.
